We're expanding our weekend recreation programming to serve more participants through sports, fitness, and community activities. This growth creates an exciting opportunity for you to design engaging experiences that help adults with developmental disabilities build confidence, develop new skills, and enjoy meaningful social connections.
About This Opportunity
As our weekend Recreation Specialist, you'll lead weekend programming that brings joy and growth to participants through athletics, Special Olympics, community outings, and fitness activities. Based at our Libertyville campus, you'll work independently while collaborating with our recreation team to create inclusive experiences. This role includes local travel (50%) to community locations and Special Olympics events, giving you the chance to connect participants with the broader community.
What you'll accomplish:
- Design weekend sports and recreation programs that help participants develop skills and confidence
- Lead Special Olympics training and community outings that foster social connections and independence
- Create adaptive fitness experiences that meet diverse abilities and personal wellness goals
- Build partnerships with community organizations to expand inclusive recreational opportunities
What you bring to this role:
You bring experience in recreation, fitness, or working with adults with developmental disabilities, along with an encouraging coaching approach that helps people succeed. Your ability to adapt activities to different skill levels and your enthusiasm for active programming make you well-suited for this role.
- Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, leisure services, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or related field OR high school diploma with 2-3 years experience working with adults with developmental disabilities or leading recreation programs
- Valid driver's license from Illinois, Indiana, or Wisconsin with a clean driving record
- Physical capacity to demonstrate and lead active recreational programming
- Basic computer skills for documentation and communication
