Summary

 

We are seeking a Senior Animal Keeper to oversee the care of nearly 300 animals and lead a team of junior staff and volunteers. This role involves ensuring animal welfare, working with participants who have developmental disabilities, interacting with the public, and performing basic farm maintenance. The ideal candidate is experienced in animal care, skilled in leadership, and comfortable with public interaction and mentoring.

 

The Role

 

  • Oversee daily animal care, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, monitoring health, and providing enrichment
  • Administer medications and adjust diets under manager supervision
  • Ensure enclosures are secured daily and perform security checks
  • Operate and maintain attractions (miniature train, carousel, golf course) and perform basic maintenance (fence repairs, gardening, cleaning)
  • Mentor team members with developmental disabilities, guiding them toward personal and professional goals
  • Train and supervise junior keepers and volunteers, ensuring proper animal care
  • Maintain accurate records of animal health, diet, and behavior
  • Ensure safety protocols and compliance with animal welfare standards
  • Collaborate with management to enhance animal care practices and visitor experiences

 

Qualifications

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with a relevant degree preferred
  • Proven leadership experience in supervising staff or volunteers and at least five years of animal care experience preferred
  • Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities is a plus
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to outstanding customer service
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, health, and welfare best practices
  • Proficiency in writing, speaking, and understanding English
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, including accurate typing, navigating websites, entering and recalling data, using word processors and spreadsheet software, and managing emails
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors in all weather, and stand or walk for extended periods
